Digital Natives
Today’s post-secondary institutions are faced with a difficult dilemma that pits students who have grown up immersed in technology against a teaching faculty that is not only far less tech-savvy, but understands the use of these “tools of the trade” from a far different perspective.
The National Technology Plan, released in January 2005, went so far as to admit “Todays students, of almost any age, are far ahead of their teachers in computer literacy. They prefer to access subject information on the Internet, where it is more abundant, more accessible and more up-to-date.” In addition, survey after survey of today’s post-secondary students reveals that one of the biggest frustrations for them is teachers who do not possess what they consider to be a fundamental understanding of technology.
The very writing of this posting lends credibility to the frustrations of todays college students. Ask most college professors or instructors about “Blogging,” “Wikis,” and “Social-networking” and one will all to often receive a somewhat blank stare. Is such a statement meant to be criticism of today’s educators? Absolutely not!
